One challenge that metal manufacturers and finishers face is corrosion protection during shipping and storage. Many strategies exist, from coatings and liquid rust preventatives to VCI packaging. The latter has revolutionized the way metals are protected in an enclosed package, replacing greasy rust preventatives with dry corrosion protection. Yet manufacturers with sharp or pointed metal parts have the additional risk of puncture, which could ruin the integrity of the entire package. Cortec® addresses this problem with CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper for heavy-duty puncture prone packaging applications.

2022 03 16 092143Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitor Protection – How It Works
All Cortec® VpCI® brand papers are coated in-house with Cortec’s proprietary VpCI® formula. Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors in the coating vaporize and form a protective corrosion inhibiting molecular barrier on metal surfaces wrapped inside the paper. When the component is unpacked, the invisible protective layer does not require cleaning and the part can be used immediately.

VCI Paper - Reinforced
While standard Cortec® CorShield® VpCI®-146 Paper is enough to satisfy the corrosion protection needs of many metals being stored in one place or shipped to another, some circumstances require a tougher grade of packaging. CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper provides two extra benefits for these heavy-duty applications:

(1) CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper offers excellent tear resistance. This is important when packaging oddly shaped metals or those with pointed or sharp edges where puncture could be a concern when handling non-reinforced papers.

(2) CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper also includes a moisture barrier. This not only adds to the durability of the paper but also protects against the ingress of water vapor for moisture sensitive items. This quality is helpful for protecting packages that undergo harsh, high humidity environments. It is also beneficial for packaging parts still covered with grease or process oils that that might leach through or break down standard paper.

How and Where to Use CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper
The traits mentioned above—corrosion protection, tear resistance, and moisture resistance—make CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper easily adaptable to a variety of packaging needs. The standard application method is to wrap a metal item in the paper, fold edges together, and tape the paper folds in place. In addition to single item packaging, CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper can be used for interleaving between layers of metal components, closing the end of shipping tubes, inserting into recessed areas of large packages, and lining crates and boxes where moisture might leach through. Possible items to protect include

Coils, wire reels, plate, bar, etc.
Raw and machined forgings and castings
Sheet metal work, stampings, springs, bearings, fasteners, tubing, pipes, nails, etc.
Finished goods: engines, machinery, tools, hardware, appliances, instruments, motors, etc.
Electrical and electronic components, controls, etc.

Whether you find yourself wrapping pipes and rods or metal coils, CorShield® VpCI®-146 Reinforced Paper is a great option for durable corrosion inhibiting moisture barrier packaging protection that resists tearing. Pilot Trial of Eco-Corr Film® for Major Global Automaker!

Czech subsidiary of one of the world’s three largest car manufacturers, began looking for a biodegradable packaging substitute to reduce the amount of conventional plastic packaging they use. As global companies are becoming more environmentally responsible and supporting a circular economy, renowned car manufacturer decided to test Cortec’s Eco-Corr Film® as part of their new “green” logistics project aimed at decreasing plastic consumption. “Green” packaging alternative Eco-Corr Film® is used for transport of automotive engines from their manufacturing facilities in the Czech Republic to India where the film is then composted. Consumption and disposal of plastics is unfortunately one of the biggest ecological problems globally. Cortec® Corporation, leader in corrosion protection solutions, has dedicated years of its research to develop “green,” sustainable alternatives to conventional polyethylene films. One of its pioneer solutions is Eco-Corr Film®, a biodegradable corrosion inhibiting film that contains Cortec’s proprietary VpCI® Technology and provides excellent contact, barrier, and vapor-phase corrosion protection for ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Eco-Corr Film® will disintegrate within months in a commercial composting environment. The exact time for films to biodegrade is dependent upon the conditions and activity of the disposal environment (temperature, soil quality, activity of microorganisms). The film is shelf stable and will not break down prematurely until disposed of in a proper composting environment. It is compostable and compliant to ASTM D6400.

As part of pilot project, car manufacturer tested Eco-Corr Films® while packaging car parts for shipment to their plant in Pune, India. Several tests were conducted for compliance with strict conditions for transport in sea containers. Quality control did not show any damage or traces of corrosion of the components being wrapped in Eco-Corr Film® upon arrival in India. In order to test if the film were able to be composted according to plan, the staff built compost bins near the plant.

After six months, the foils had largely biodegraded in the compost bins, helping them to eliminate plastic waste. Eco-Corr Film® successfully replaces conventional plastic films previously used by this car manufacturer and provides the same effective corrosion protection. Organic packaging material is composted at a plant in Pune, India, and used as a soil improver in a logistics park. Among other things, the resulting compost is intended for use as fertilizer on the trees in the logistics park in front of the Pune plant, where, starting in March 2019, visitors and employees have had the opportunity to plant trees in order to rejuvenate the weedy area into a park. The successful trial opens the door for the customer to cut their amount of conventional plastic packaging in half for shipments to Pune, thus eliminating a significant amount of plastic waste (as much as 500 kg [1102 lbs] per month). In July 2020, the company launched a one-year pilot project to investigate the use of Eco-Corr Film® on a large scale.
